Mosaic Project

Camp Discovery was conceived in 2004 when Joe Tonsmeire was undergoing treatments in Boise, Idaho at St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute. He and his family were moved by the young patients they found there and were eager to make a difference in the lives of children and families faced with serious health challenges - the concept of Camp Discovery.

During the long hours spent in Boise for Joe’s treatments, his brother, Skipper, found a little shop called Mosaic Essential and convinced the rest of the family to escape with art for a few hours by creating mosaics. The Tonsmeires met the owner, Reham Aarti Jacobsen, a mixed media mosaic artist while at the shop. They forged a partnership with Reham, who developed projects to offer to the young patients in treatment at St. Luke’s.

She provides the base shapes, adhesive, materials and finish work for the children to create their own mosaic. The program has grown steadily since its beginnings in 2006; by early 2008 the children were completing three times as many mosaics as they had in previous years. Reham has storage space at the hospital for materials and volunteers to ensure the children can work on the projects either in a group setting or alone in their rooms.
